Not only was the price point extremely reasonable at a time when ASUS needed a business boost, the first eeePC notebooks were entirely solid state storage. I dropped my twice on hard concrete. One was a dramatic tumble down a concrete stairwell. Not cracked screen, no ruined hard drive.
Just a cosmetic ding on one corner. If you needed more storage than the existing 4Gbyte, you just carried a USBstick to expand your storage. My Lenovo s is an Atom N powered device. If you can find a N or N powered netbook, the experience is smoother.
The N was really strapped, even under Linux. My other is an Asus C, the last series they sold with a 1st gen Atom. It has a dual core Atom N, which is a spritely chip for a netbook, but the machine is late enough that it can be a bit twitchy with some apps. Fluxbox, IceWM, jwm and others are available as well as text and graphical browsers, grant and light applications. Great article. I recently fired up my eee pc 4G with window 7 and it was slow as molasses.
I did a lot of searching for a lightweight OS and after trying a few, I found puppy linux, BionicPup 32 version. It works great and set up was a few minutes.
It is using less than half the 4G drive and the performance is much better even with the MB memory. Thanks for posting this update! I was going back to check the noatime SSD settings and other optimisations I remember from 10 years ago.
Same as Tom, I booted the Eee after a few years in a carrier bag. It was a bit knackered with a line of dead pixels. Package support feels up to date on the 32 bit hardware.
